Buckeye, Arizona: A City Between Its Past and Future
Documenting the people, places, and changing landscape of a growing Arizona community.
Located west of Phoenix, Buckeye, Arizona, is a city with a rich history, diverse communities, and a landscape that continues to change. Once known primarily for its agricultural roots, Buckeye has grown into a city where older neighborhoods, local businesses, farms, and new developments exist alongside one another.
As the city continues to expand, parts of its history remain visible in the buildings, streets, and everyday places that have been part of the community for generations.
Through my photography, I want to document Buckeye as it is today, capturing the places and details that may look very different in the years ahead.
A City With History

Buckeye’s history is closely connected to agriculture, transportation, and the people who helped establish the community. Older buildings, historic streets, and longtime businesses serve as reminders of the city’s earlier years.
Walking through the older parts of Buckeye, there are places that have remained familiar even as the surrounding community has changed. Some buildings continue to serve their original purposes, while others have taken on new uses.
These places are part of Buckeye’s identity. They offer a connection to earlier generations and a reminder of how the city developed into what it is today.
Agriculture and the Land

Long before many of today’s neighborhoods and shopping centers were built, agriculture played an important role in Buckeye’s development.
Farming remains a visible part of the surrounding landscape, with agricultural fields, irrigation systems, and rural properties reflecting the area’s history.
As development continues, the contrast between farmland and newly constructed neighborhoods becomes increasingly noticeable.
These agricultural landscapes represent more than open spaces. They are part of the community’s history and the work that helped shape Buckeye.
The People and Industries of Buckeye
[Insert photographs of local businesses, workers, storefronts, and people in the community.]
Buckeye is home to people from different backgrounds, generations, and walks of life. Some families have lived in the area for decades, while others have recently made the city their home.
The community is supported by many different types of work, including agriculture, construction, retail, transportation, and locally owned businesses.
Behind these industries are the people who contribute to everyday life in Buckeye. Business owners, workers, families, and residents all play a part in shaping the community.
Their stories are just as important as the buildings and streets around them.
Through this project, I hope to photograph not only the places where people work and live, but also the individuals who make Buckeye what it is today.
A Growing City
[Insert your photographs of the construction crane near Costco in Buckeye.]
Buckeye continues to experience growth, with new neighborhoods, businesses, roads, and construction projects changing the landscape.
Near the Costco in Buckeye, a large construction crane rises above one of the area’s new developments. It is one of the many visible signs of change taking place throughout the city.
Construction sites are often overlooked because they are temporary parts of everyday life. Cranes, unfinished buildings, and heavy equipment become familiar sights as communities expand.
Eventually, the equipment will disappear, construction will end, and these locations will become part of the city’s everyday surroundings.
Photographing these sites allows me to preserve a moment in Buckeye’s development, showing what these places looked like before the work was completed.
The Everyday Places We Overlook
[Insert photographs of neighborhood streets, older signs, small businesses, houses, and ordinary details.]
Not every photograph needs to show a historic landmark or a major construction project.
Sometimes the most meaningful images come from ordinary places: a small neighborhood store, an older building, a familiar street corner, or a business sign that has stood for years.
These are places people pass every day without giving them much thought.
Yet, as cities grow, even the smallest details can change. Businesses close, buildings are renovated, streets are redesigned, and familiar surroundings slowly become something different.
What may seem like an ordinary photograph today could become an important reminder of how a place once looked.
Before It Changes
Buckeye is a city with a past that remains visible and a future that continues to take shape.
Its history, industries, neighborhoods, and people all contribute to the story of a community that is constantly evolving.
This photographic project is not about stopping change or suggesting that everything was better in the past. It is about recognizing the value of documenting places while they are still here.
Some of the buildings and landscapes in these photographs may remain unchanged for decades. Others may look completely different in just a few years.
Through Before It Changes, I hope to preserve a small part of Buckeye’s story, one photograph at a time.
